Broadcom supplies Ethernet controllers to the computer industry's leading PC OEMs and add-in card manufacturers. Broadcom offers the below reference drivers as a courtesy to end users. The functionality of the reference drivers provided below may differ from the current drivers installed on the target system. Additionally, since we do not sell products directly to end-users, we do not offer comprehensive support for Broadcom's customers' products. If you are having a problem with a Broadcom-based Ethernet controller product, please contact either the PC or board manufacturer for technical support.
In the Launchpad Bug reports +source/linux/+bug/1005699, see item #24 for the fix. The discussion talks about a tigon3 (broadcom) driver problem in the kernel. The 3.0.24 and below tree had this error but as Ubuntu now has support for a 3.0.25-40 kernel the bug has been fixed. Item #20 talks the details of how this problem was discovered by working back from the development kernels 3.4, 3.3, and 3.2 and how it was discovered what the tg3_stop_block_error means. It is a problem with TSO. TSO stands for TCP Segmentation offload.
I have a Dell D830 which has a Broadcom 57xx Ethernet NIC. I just noticed that the speed of the controller is listed as 100 Mb. When I went to the device manager, I found the following:Device :Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit ControllerDriver: Microsoft ver 10.100.3.0 (b57nd60a.sys)Properties.Advanced.Speed&Duplex: Auto (The drop down box lists 10 Mb Full, 10Mb Half, 100 Mb Full, 100 Mb Half, Auto)Loading the driver from Broadcom gives the same result. Is there a registry setting that limits the maximum controller speed.
udev should detect your network interface controller (NIC) and automatically load the necessary kernel module at startup. Check the "Ethernet controller" entry (or similar) from the lspci -v output. It should tell you which kernel module contains the driver for your network device. For example:
09:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4313 802.11bgn Wireless Network Adapter (rev 01) Subsystem: Dell Device 0012 Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19 Memory at f7e00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K] Capabilities: Kernel driver in use: wl Kernel modules: wl, bcma, brcmsmac 2ff7e9595c
